10 Boudoir Myths: Busted!
Boudoir photography is a beautiful and EMPOWERING experience, but there are SO many misconceptions out there that will hold people back from even giving it a chance. Let’s set the record straight and tackle some of the most common myths about boudoir shoots!
Myth 1: "You need to look like a model to do boudoir."
Busted: Boudoir is for EVERYONE. Period. Regardless of age, body type, or physical appearance. boudoir celebrates individuality and uniqueness. The goal is to highlight YOUR natural beauty and make you feel confident in your own skin. It's my job as the photographer to be skilled in posing, lighting, and composition so that we can bring out your best features, no matter your shape or size.
Myth 2: "Boudoir sessions are only for women."
Busted: While boudoir photography is often associated with women, it’s not exclusive to them. I've shot men as well and truly believe people of ALL genders should enjoy the experience of a boudoir session. Men, couples, and non-binary individuals are just as deserving of self-love and should definitely hop on the chance to celebrate their own beauty and connection.
Myth 3: "Boudoir is inappropriate or vulgar."
Busted: Boudoir photography is about ART and EMPOWERMENT, not vulgarity. A professional photographer ensures that the session is tasteful and respectful, capturing images that are sensual, elegant, and empowering. The tone of the shoot is entirely customizable to match your comfort level and preferences and At the end of the day your shoot should 100% reflect YOU as an individual!
Myth 4: "You need expensive lingerie for a session."
Busted: While fancy lingerie can add a glamorous touch, it’s definitely NOT a requirement by any means. Boudoir is about capturing your essence and personality, and many people choose to incorporate simple items like a favorite sweater, an oversized shirt, or even just a sheet. What matters most is that you feel comfortable and confident in whatever you wear! Some of the most fun shoots I've had, have been with the simplest of outfits!
Myth 5: "You have to be completely nude."
Busted: Nudity is entirely optional and NEVER a requirement for boudoir photography. The session is all about what makes YOU feel comfortable and confident. Many people choose to wear lingerie, robes, or other clothing that highlights their personality and style. Your photographer (including myself) will work with you to create photos that align with your boundaries and vision!

Myth 6: "I need to lose weight before my session."
Busted: Boudoir photography is about celebrating who you are right now. There’s no “perfect” size or shape for boudoir. Professional photographers are skilled in posing and lighting techniques that flatter all body types, helping you look and feel your absolute best just as you are.
Myth 7: "Boudoir sessions are only for special occasions."
Busted: While boudoir photography makes a fantastic gift for anniversaries, weddings, or Valentine’s Day, it doesn’t have to be tied to a special event at all. Many people book boudoir sessions as a way to celebrate themselves, mark a milestone, or simply boost their confidence! It's as simple as that!
Myth 8: "I’ll feel awkward and uncomfortable."
Busted: It’s normal to feel nervous before your session, but a professional boudoir photographer is experienced in creating a safe, supportive, and fun environment. They’ll guide you through poses and help you relax so you can enjoy the experience. Many clients find their nerves disappear within the first few minutes and its my FAVORITE thing to see clients come out of their shell and become authentically themselves!
Myth 9: "The photos will end up on the internet."
Busted: Your privacy is my top priority! Reputable photographers have strict privacy policies and only share images with your explicit permission. You have complete control over how and where your photos are used! I personally send out a questionnaire to every client so that we are 100% on the same page with the discresion of your photos.
Myth 10: "Boudoir is expensive and not worth it."
Busted: Boudoir photography is an investment in yourself. It’s about SO much more than just the photos; it’s about the experience, the confidence boost, and the lasting memories. Many photographers offer packages to suit a variety of budgets, and the results are often priceless. I really recommend going to someone specialized, as they have the experience to really make you feel and look your best. This can be a very vulnerable experience, and you shouldn't have any regrets going to someone who doesn't know what they're doing just because it's their off season.
